Crunchy Salem: Living Green And Renewable Energy Fair
If you scratch the surface in Salem, look beyond the silly tourist cliches and the not-quite-there-yet character of a lot of gentrifying neighborhood, you’ll find a place that’s smart, artsy, vibrant and fun, and overall fairly cool. We love Gulu Gulu and Cornerstone Books, and we just discovered the way-better-than-Newberry-Comics Harrison’s.
Punk rockers, complete with Mowhawks and wallet chains, roam the streets. (The image links to Salem’s local music scene — well, one of them.)
On June 14, the Chamber of Commerce will hold it’s first annual Living Green and Renewable Energy fair. It looks like fun, but I don’t know what to expect; the whole chocolate fair was a bit of a waste of time (i.e., not enough chocolate). Hopefully this will be better.
I’m hoping some readers will chime in with other Salem activities — free exposure for your event here, folks, and an education for me. I keep finding cool places like Harrison’s and Feed Your Head, and people are like , “Duh.” Sorry….I’m new here….
Oh, and you tourist types should check out ipod tours of Salem here.

Don’t forget Coffee Time, home of lobster tails and Eastern European pastry marvels! Even the coffee is good.
