What’s Hot and Cold in Brighton, Brookline
Normally, nothing happens in July. This year, though, seems like life’s awhirl in Brighton:
- Boston College finally bought the luxury apartment building at 2000 Commonwealth Avenue. And judging from the list of amenities, it will be a dorm to rival The Ritz.
- The Boston Landmarks commission denied landmark status to the Sparhawk House in Brighton Center. The owner is now free to raze the whole thing and put up a six-family, the way he always wanted.
- A developer proposed a plan to put up a five-story condo complex at 332 Chestnut Hill Avenue, across from the Chestnut Hill Reservoir. If done right, the mixed-use development could inject a little life in Cleveland Circle. (And almost anything, short of a sewage treatment plant, is better than a gas station that’s currently on that site.)
- Most importantly, rumors are afloat that a Cold Stone Creamery is moving into Cleveland Circle. Residents (like me when I lived in the area) long prayed for an ice-cream shop. With new businesses moving in and new condos going up, it looks like groggy Cleveland Circle is finally waking up. I hope a coffee shop, a bookstore and maybe even a small grocer will join the new Chipotle’s and sushi bar to make this area feel more like a neighborhood and less like a pass-through.
Meanwhile, on the residential side, houses are going on the market, and coming off the market, and sellers are lowering their prices and sometimes they’re even raising prices. Here’s what’s new this week:
